Unlike most distance sensors that rely reflected light intensity or reflected angles to determine range, the VL6180 uses a precise clock to measure the time it takes light to bounce back from a surface. The results of the measurement are transmitted with 1/10 mm resolution via a digital or serial interface to a PC or a PLC which now can place the object into the desired position.
