Measurement System For Testing & Binning Of Back-End LEDs

The photometric specifications of LEDs must meet very high tolerance requirements regardless of whether they are to be used in general, automotive or other specialist lighting applications. This is often a problem since the manufacturing tolerances of LEDs can be higher than those permitted in the end-use applications. Also, LED binning by LED manufacturers in order to classify LEDs based on their tolerances is performed with flash mode testing using pulsed current flow. However, end-use applications of the LEDs often operate in constant current mode and with significant thermal effects. The sophisticated LED processing industry therefore requires measurement devices that can be used for both manufacturer-compliant pulsed mode, as well as constant current operation mode. When the LEDs are run in constant current mode, the junction temperature has significant influence on the performance and lifetime of the LED. Therefore, test systems should be able to test the LEDs at specific junction temperatures.

Physitemp’s original Thermes high accuracy ISA based data acquisition system has been redesigned to create a more versatile USB model. The new system requires no internal connections to your computer and simply connects via an external USB port on your laptop or desktop computer. Two versions of the data acquisition system are available. The standard version, THERMES USB, is connected to your computer USB port. The wireless version - THERMES USB WFI, can be either directly connected to a USB port or, with the included wireless receiver, positioned up to 100 feet from the host computer. Each unit will accommodate up to 7 type T thermocouple sensors and multiple Thermes units may be connected to the same computer for more thermocouple inputs. A high accuracy electronic cold junction compensation circuit maintains typical system accuracy of ±0.2°C over an ambient temperature range of 15 to 35°C. With ever decreasing geometries, the way we perform HTOL requires careful consideration. In lower geometry device leakage currents are not only higher but vary greatly. Temperature control at DUT level – required to achieve correct junction temperature at every DUT. For higher geometries, HTOL can be performed in a more traditional way but with devices consuming more power, the ambient temperatures required varies greatly. Multiple temperature zones are required – multi zones system or multiple smaller HTOL systems.
