Flame Ionization Detector

A flame ionization detector converts a hydrocarbon gas concentration into an electrical signal. The flame is hydrogen fueled and burns in hydrocarbon free combustion air. Either side of the flame are two electrodes between which an electric field is generated by means of a polarization voltage. The sample is pre-mixed with the fuel gas and heated in the flame to a temperature at which the hydrocarbon molecules ‘crack’ and CH fragments appear. These CH fragments are oxidated by the oxygen in the combustion air resulting in the formation of CHO+ ions. The ion current then passes to the electrodes and the resulting current measured is proportional to the quantity of C atoms derived from organic compounds.The Thermo-FID features two separate microprocessor controlled pressure compensations to avoid any influence from environmental or sample conditions. In addition, the complete Thermo-FID range of analyzers are equipped with a flame trap that is used as a heated sample inlet filter. The measurement chamber and all material in contact with the sample gas are heated between 120°C and 200°C to avoid condensation.

A geiger counter detects nuclear radiation by measuring the emission of ionizing radiation of alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays. Also referred to as a radiation detector, a geiger counter consists of two main elements: the processing electronics and the geiger tube. The geiger tube is filled with low-pressure inert gas like helium, argon or neon. If radioactive radiation occurs, the inert gas is ionized. An anode within the geiger tube registers the quantity of ionized particles numerically correlating with the strength of the radioactive radiation. The radioactivity measurement is then displayed on the LCD screen of the geiger counter or radiation detector.It is very important to measure radioactivity as well as to classify radioactivity values. For example, terrestrial gamma radiation is measured according to general values from 0.03 - 0.3 µSv/h (microsievert / hour). This "normal" oscillation range is conditioned by natural radioactive elements in the ground such as uranium and potassium. To calculate this factor, one must take into consideration cosmic radiation. A new ultraviolet spectrophotometer system for optical metrology just arrived at NASA Goddard! The VUVAS-10X spectrophotometer works best in the 90 to 160 nanometer wavelength range, also known as deep or vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region. It uses a windowless hydrogen plasma light source and differential pump section to reach many wavelengths beyond those of conventional deuterium lamps. The source also works with other gases, or gas mixtures, for atomic spectral line emission from about 30 nanometers (double ionized Helium gas) up to the Visible light range. The new spectrophotometer system, McPherson VUVAS-10X, uses a one-meter focal length high-resolution monochromator with the special light source, scintillated detector and Model 121 goniometric sample chamber. This McPherson spectrophotometer system will help develop, inspect and qualify optical materials and coatings used for very high altitude and extraterrestrial space flight missions.

AOI Handlings System

The AOI handling system is a compact facility with various test units. Via an ionization cleaning station the ceramics are transferred to the contacting station. There, the resistance values of the substrates are tested with a rigid needle adapter. Afterward, the ceramics are further conveyed to the three (optionally four) AOI test stations (for automatic optical inspection) and are tested for cracks, unevenness, faulty imprints, contamination, etc. The poorly evaluated ceramics arrive at a review station where the operator can assess and evaluate the errors on the monitor. If the operator is uncertain about a fault, the ceramic in question can be positioned under the microscope position and inspected by eye. Poorly defined ceramics are marked accordingly with an ink pen.

These avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are silicon photodiodes with an internal gain mechanism. As with a conventional photodiode, absorption of incident photons creates electron-hole pairs. A high reverse bias voltage creates a strong internal electric field, which accelerates the electrons through the silicon crystal lattice and produces secondary electrons by impact ionization. The resulting electron avalanche can produce gain factors up to several hundred.
