Accelerometers
Columbia Research Laboratories
The force balance accelerometer has a classical critically-damped, second-order frequency response. There is no peaking in the response but simply a smooth roll-off above the natural frequency. This property along with the excellent characteristics of the "HP" torquer design makes Columbia accelerometers the best choice for demanding applications where precise DC and near-DC measurements are needed in demanding shock and wide band vibration environments. Columbia force balance accelerometers are available to cover virtually all applications. Low noise, high output units can be used for seismic structure motion studies while miniature, high range versions are optimum for measuring more violent high G environments encountered in many industrial, aircraft and missile applications.

Seismic Sensors & Transducers
Displacement Pickups are vibration transducers that incorporate a spring-mass system with eddy-current damping using a frictionless pivot. This pivot is a spring flexure that serves as the ‘spring’ and a moment arm attached to the pivot serves as the ‘mass’, which allows resolutions down to the micro inch range. At frequencies above 50Hz, the mass remains fixed in space and becomes an inertial reference. A transducer within the pickup senses the motion of the mounting base relative to the inertial reference and converts it into a proportional signal. Appropriate damping results in a frequency response flat down to 10 Hz. Note that the pickup senses in only one plane, which is perpendicular to the mounting base.

Seismic Signal Conditioners
Seismic signal conditioners are designed to accept an input from (and provide power to) a seismic sensor. They convert the signal to a proportional 4-20mA DC signal that can be used as an input to process control instrumentation such as a PLC or DCS. They provide additional convenience features such as optional displays, BNC connectors for access to the dynamic sensor signal, and bandpass filtering. Metrix offers seismic signal conditioners that can accept either acceleration or velocity sensors, and are available with or without an integral display.
