TDR Structural Health Monitoring
Material Sensing & Instrumentation
MSI Time-Domain-Reflectometry (TDR) Structural-Health Monitoring probes the structural health of a composite part by propagating a fast electrical pulse along a distributed linear sensor which has been fabricated directly in the laminate. The sensor is formed from the native graphite fibers already used in composite manufacture, and constitutes zero defect. Fibers are patterned into a microwave waveguide geometry, or transmission line, and interrogated by a rapid pulse as shown below. Structural faults along the line cause distortions in waveguide geometry, producing reflected pulses similar to radar. Cracking, delamination, disbonds, moisture penetration, marcelling, and strain are all detected by propagation delay, for sensor lengths up to several meters.

Fairview Microwave’s line of coaxial RF probes and RF PCB probe positioner are ideal for use with chip evaluations, signal integrity measurements, coplanar waveguide, substrate characterization, gigabit SERDES and test fixture applications. The RF coaxial probes provide return loss better than 10 dB and a maximum operating frequency of 20 GHz. The probes have a 3.5mm female interface, a pitch of 800 or 1500 micron and they can be cable-mounted. They feature gold-plated contacts and can be used by hand, with or without a probe positioner. Full Band Noise Figure and Gain Test Extenders
STG-06-S1
Full band noise figure and gain test extenders are offered to extend noise and gain measuring capabilities up to higher millimeterwave frequency ranges. These extenders are designed to interface with noise and gain test systems that have an input IF of 10 MHz to 1.6 GHz, such as the industry standard Keysight 8970A/B, N8975A and Maury MT 2075B. The noise figure and gain test extenders include a high-performance, solid-state noise source (STZ series) and a full waveguide down converter (STC series), which consists of a Faraday isolator (STF series), full band mixer (SFB series), frequency multiplier, and IF amplifier. A frequency source with an output signal in the frequency range of 10 to 20 GHz is required as a local oscillator for the down converter. The noise source is automatically powered on and off by the noise figure meter.

Probe Antennas
Probe antennas are offered as both standard and custom models with a rectangular waveguide interface. Probe antennas can only support linear polarization. These antennas are often used to measure the gain of other antennas by comparing the signal levels of the probe antenna and antenna under testing. The standard models operate across the full waveguide band and offer 6.5 dB nominal gain and 115 and 60 degrees half power beamwidth at center frequency.
