The space market has been driving towards more efficient power management solutions. Part of the drive includes the use of Gallium Nitride Field Effect Transistors (GaN FETs) for power conversion. GaN FETs have higher power conversion efficiency and have more natural immunity to radiation, due to them being wide-bandgap semiconductors. Equally important is the use of the correct driver that will allow reliable operation and maximize the benefits of the GaN FETs. Some of the key driver requirements are: a well-regulated gate drive voltage; high source/sink current capability and a split driver output stage.

General Purpose Low-side MOSFET Drivers

Renesas' family of low-side FET drivers are very high-speed matched dual-drivers capable of delivering peak currents of 2.0 amps into highly capacitive loads and excellent at driving large capacitive loads with minimal delay and switching times. The high-speed performance is achieved by means of a proprietary "Turbo-Driver" circuit that speeds up input stages by tapping the wider voltage swing at the output. Improved speed and drive capability are enhanced by matched rise and fall delay times. These matched delays maintain the integrity of input-to-output pulse-widths to reduce timing errors and clock skew problems. This improved performance is accompanied by a 10 fold reduction in supply currents over bipolar drivers, yet without the delay time problems commonly associated with CMOS devices. Dynamic switching losses are minimized with non-overlapped drive techniques.

The PicoBuck LED Driver is an economical and easy to use driver that will allow you to control and blend three different LEDs on three different channels. By default, each channel is driven at 330mA; that current can be reduced by either presenting an analog voltage or a PWM signal to the board. Version 12 of the board adds a solderable jumper that can be closed to increase the maximum current to 660mA. The new voltage regulator also increased the voltage rating on the various components on the board, allowing it to be used up to the full 36V rating of the AL8860 part.
